Multiage

Multiage Learners - Winter Picture
The multiage program has been a part of Riverview Elementary since 2011 and over the years has served learners in a variety of grade level combinations from first through fifth grade. Our multiage philosophy comes from the belief that children all develop and learn at different rates and in different ways. In a multiage classroom, teaching focuses on individual development, developing lifelong real-world skills, and building community. Students work in flexible groups throughout the day.
What makes this program so unique is the fact that multiage learners work with those of different ages and grades throughout each school day. In addition, learners have the opportunity to collaborate and build relationships with learners in all grades through projects and activities. This approach allows our teachers to meet learners where they are at and design instruction that is targeted at each learner's strengths and areas of growth. The multiage teachers collaborate closely and communicate consistently with one another to ensure each learner is given the proper support. Common language, procedures, and expectations are in place throughout the multiage program to create a sense of predictability and routine. Further, strong and trusting relationships are emphasized to ensure each learner feels safe, cared for, and believed in. With support from multiple teachers, learners are nurtured and challenged with a variety of learning experiences and concepts, allowing them to develop at their own pace.
